[hacknews] Emulex DH operational

henry@utzoo.UUCP (Henry Spencer) (12/09/83)

We are now running most of our terminals on the Emulex, after a major
rewiring job. Two of the DZ distribution panels have been removed, and
the arrangement of the distribution-panel rack changed; this was needed
because many of the terminal cables are not long enough (!) to reach
much higher in the rack than they did already. As a side effect of all
this, tty names have been totally rearranged. tty00-tty47 are Emulex
lines, suitable for normal things. ttyd00-ttyd15 are DZ lines, suitable
for relatively slow (1200 baud at most) things. Most existing lines
have been renumbered due to the rearrangement. There is a 336 public
terminal on each DH panel, so that correct functioning can be confirmed
without running around the building.

Various things that had been disconnected to save ports, notably Zodiac2,
are back.

The four now-superfluous DZs are still on the system, but will go away
as soon as the Emulex is shaken down. /etc/ttys.old is the old version
of /etc/ttys. Note that falling back to a DZ unix requires undoing the
rewiring job, ugh.

The Sanders is still on its DL at the moment, but will be moved to a DH
port as soon as we find the time to experiment with baud rates and
handshaking. Once this has happened, the backplane in the expansion
box will become superfluous (it holds the extra DZs and the DL) and
will go off the system again.

Terminals are still running at 2400 baud right now. We will not try
to speed up user terminals until we are sure the Emulex is behaving.

Talk(1) has been revised to match, ditto the uucp control files.
