[hacknews] shell mail checking every minute

david@utzoo.UUCP (David Trueman) (02/01/84)

A new version of the shell (sh(1)) has been installed. This version does
mail-checking only every minute, instead of before each prompt. The former
clearly represented unnecessary overhead. This version also checks for a
mailbox that has grown in size since the last check. The main visible benefit
will be the lack of a ``you have mail'' message after deleting mail. The only
disadvantage is that it is possible to delete some mail and then get a small
message that goes unnoticed. This circumstance should be relatively unusual.
