In the course of adapting news to take the new history-file format,
the history file was rebuilt to include all files in the /usr/spool/news
tree. There were more files in the tree than in the old history file
because of a bug that caused files to be incompletely removed from the
tree. The bug was fixed quite some time ago, but the tree wasn't swept
for old files because this is a lot of work. That's an understatement;
the tree-walker that rebuilt the history file ran for over 48 hours!
This is why backups were cancelled last Wed and done in a slightly odd
way last Thurs.
The final numbers are 31137 files in the tree, of which 1639 were not
in the old history file. The first number is unusually large because
we haven't been expiring old news for the last couple of months. This
will change shortly.
