[hacknews] nroff -s in background

henry@utzoo.UUCP (Henry Spencer) (07/24/84)

Nroff has been fixed so that it checks properly for errors and end-of-file
when reading a character to tell it to wake up from a -s wait. It used to
ignore them; now it terminates when it gets one. This has the side effect
that running an nroff -s in the background yields only the first page of
output, which is probably the right thing for it to do. (Arguably it
should yield no output, since -s is definitely meaningless in a non-
interactive environment, but the way -s is implemented gives us the first
page regardless.)
