Installed an updated ed(1) as (temporarily) ned(1). We've been running a
substantially out-of-date ed, lacking various bug fixes and whatnot. The
major changes are:
- Invoked as "rted", or after use of the 'r' subcommand of 'o',
it does various things appropriate to editing RT11 files.
(This is pretty useless to us, but useful to other sites.)
- It uses the SHELL environment variable for shell escapes, which
makes life simpler for users with nonstandard shells.
- The old '*' command is finally dead.
- The error messages have been improved in a number of places. In
particular, the can't-edit-this-file code now distinguishes
between "doesn't exist" and "private".
- I've fixed a long-standing, nasty bug which caused buffer overflows
to put ed into a state where writing the file out was impossible.
- Various bug fixes, cleanups, and portability improvements.
This will become the official ed shortly.
