[hacknews] new /unix, minor improvements

henry@utzoo.UUCP (Henry Spencer) (11/01/84)

Now running a new kernel with minor improvements. An old (non-working)
kludge for dialout stuff got taken out. The kludgey "all8b" mode for
running HP laser printers has been replaced by a new "cpass" mode, done
rather more cleanly; this is not fully tested yet. And the (previously
undocumented, and rather peculiar) behavior of signal 0 has been modified
to be simple and clean: it can now be used to test whether a process
really still exists, in a safe and dependable way. Kill(1) has not yet
been modified to match.
