[hacknews] remote job entry is here

david@utzoo.UUCP (David Trueman) (12/13/84)

Remote job entry (RJE) to the UTCS IBM mainframe is now possible. This
article gives more detail than the one in newsgroup `general'.

The command is `rje'. It takes a list of files as arguments and concatenates
them preceded by an automatically generated job card and control statements.
If the user has an environment variable SAC defined, it will be used in the
job card. Otherwise, a system-owned SAC will be used; in this case, no disk
storage on the IBM system may be used as we have no charge-back mechanism
(any disk files charged to our SAC will be removed without warning).

`Rje' has several options:
	-l lines
set the line limit in thousands (default 5)
	-m minutes
set the CPU limit in minutes (default 1)
	-s seconds
set the CPU limit in seconds (default 0)

The user will get back three mail messages for each job submitted. The
first one is mainly noise, but it does confirm that the job was received
and submitted to the IBM system. The second message contains the output
from the job and the third gives billing information. At present the
third message is verbose, but this will be fixed soon.

The user can expect a turnaround time of about half an hour, I think.
