[hacknews] readnews

henry (09/23/82)

Fixed a long-known bug in readnews(1): an interrupt during the reading
of the .newsrc file could cause a truncated version of same to get
rewritten. Readnews now insists on reading the entire file.

Enlarged the central bitmap in readnews(1) to head off an overflow
problem in heavy-traffic newsgroups.

Installed a new version of readnews, extensively modified and cleaned up.
Notably: the date is printed as part of the header, replies and followups
now work, there is no more fiddling with tty modes, and the help file is
up to date. There has been extensive simplification, and some old functions
are gone. Replies invoke mailto; followups invoke postnews. Postnews has
grown a -h option for this purpose, since readnews wants to assemble the
header for the followup and just toss it to postnews, rather than having
postnews quiz the user about it. Possibly mailto ought to have something
similar.

At the moment, readnews's control file is set up for the old set of local
newsgroups. That is about to change.
