[net.music] Yes, Bach, Bush, ...

bruns@wanginst.UUCP (Glenn Bruns) (07/08/85)

Is it my imagination or has net.music been getting really weird lately? The
last couple of months have been overwelming. Here's some loose comments
regarding:

o Yes

It's amusing reading all the Yes postings. I had assumed that most netters
were too young for that. I used to be a BIG Yes fan but their music seems
irrelevent now. A year ago I tried listening to "Tales from Topographic
Oceans" followed by the Genesis album "The Lamb Lies ..." and it seemed
that Yes's sound (at least on Tales) was obsolete but that Genesis still
sounded fresh. Maybe that's because Peter Gabriel sounded close to the
edge (clever gag) like a lot of 80's music, while Yes was mushy. Funny how
Roxy Music used to sound sharp in the 70's, and now sound glazed over.

o Bach

I have to respond to Doug Alan's statement that Bach wrote music for musicians.
Sorry, but I don't think that can be backed up. As I understand it,
Bach primarily wrote for the church, and churchgoers were his audience.
The technical aspects of his music do not have to be understood to enjoy
his music, just as Doug does not have to understand synthesizers to enjoy KB's
music.

o Good vs. Bad music

Does this discussion increase anyone's enjoyment of music? I don't
like the kind of argument that implies that those who enjoy commercial
music are harming themselves. The reasoning about good music promoting
intelligence, warmth, etc. misses something about the variety of musical
experience. Sometimes music just makes me tap my feet; I don't feel
particularly compelled to perform some humane or inspired act afterwards.
This thought came to me when I heard a Madonna song ("Lucky Star"?) on my
car radio. I must admit it was rather catchy and the lyrics innocuous.
Seemed pretty harmless to me. I certainly didn't feel like treating women as
objects afterwards (and I usually do! :^) ).

o Temper Tantrums

Is a full moon the cause for the recent rash of intense flame sessions?
Do we really need this in net.music? I mean, posting flames to the group
that include obscenities is pretty bad.

o Early Sparks

Anyone familiar with early Sparks? The lyrics were hilarious; the rhythyms
frantic. Last night as I was falling asleep the following lines from
"In My Family" from the "Kimono my House" album came to me:

   That's how it's gonna be,
   cause it's my family,
from the biggest branch to the smallest leaf,
   still your gonna see, similarity.

And from their song "Equator"

   Equator, Equator,
she said she'd meet me there,
she must be just around the bend.

Here here! Couldn't agree more. If people in real life start swearing at
each other they are no longer having an 'intelligent' discussion, assuming
that they were in the first place. There is no place for that kind of thing
in a public forum. There are plenty of good ways to describe feelings and
emotions without resorting to obscenities, and *all* of them describe them
better than cutting loose with a foul mouth (or keyboard).

Since this is net.MUSIC, let me extend this opinion to music also. I
personally feel that there is no place for 'nasty words' in music either,
although there are a *few* songs that are so classic in other ways that I
don't mind overlooking the temporary lack of mental capability that caused the
words to be written in the first place. I hear some stuff though that it seems
like every other word is a swear, and that to me, is one of the things that
makes a certain song 'bad.'

Is it really so hard to disagree with someone without resorting to obscenity?
This is not directed at anyone in specific, so flames and curses to /dev/null
please.

> Anyone familiar with early Sparks?

Wow, it's nice to hear a name like Sparks mentioned here! I have two of their
albums, 'Indiscreet', and 'Propaganda.' I don't know how 'early' they are in
relation to 'Kimono My House' but there is a lot of amusing and enjoyable
stuff on them, particularly 'Happy Hunting Ground', 'Hospitality On Parade',
'Something for the Girl with Everything ( a minor hit a few years back, if I
remember correctly), 'Never Turn Your Back on Mother Earth' etc....
I also enjoy, and have been known to play on the air, the classic (although
newer) "Eaten By the Monster of Love"

"Grasp at straws that don't want grasping
Gaze at clouds that come down crashing
Never turn your back on mother earth"

"Irrelevant" and "obsolete?" What do these have to do with music?

Try listening to "Close to the Edge."

I love Sparks! Especially "Indiscrete" and "Kimono My House". I first saw them
on "The Midnight Special" when I was in high school. Our mouths kinda dropped
open and we said "boy these guys are weird", then we ran out to buy what
ever we could find of theirs.

Packed with pop hits, loaded for commercial bear, is the
Sparks album of a few years back called "Angst in My Pants".
It's a bargain bin dweller as of late so keep an eye out.
