(a) what good does it do to mine a harbor? Mines don't have any ownership associated with them, so there's no selective protection for your ships. Anyone who doesn't have the checkpoint code can't get in anyway; if they do have the code, why'd you mine the place? (Does failure to give the right code behave differently if the harbor is mined? If so, what's the point of mining anyway -- I'd rather impound a ship than have it sunk.) Mining under bridges makes more sense, because the destruction of the bridge would then blockade the sector. I'd really like to be able to avoid mines by knowing a checkpoint code. And I'd like to be able to use shore-based artillery (or maybe ships) to actively blockade a channel, say by combining 'defend' and 'checkpoint'. (b) Anyone have a tonnage list for different ships? (I care because the 'set' command needs it.) --Steve Bellovin duke!unc!smb smb.unc@udel-relay

I quote from the Empire manual (under mine): ``Harbors and the water under bridge spans can be mined. Your ships will automatically avoid these mines when passing through, (and minesweepers will not pick them up).'' So I guess if you really don't want any more ships (for some odd reason) and were feeling belligerent, you could mine your harbor and let some unfortunate enemy float into it. You did bring up a point that I have been thinking about for the past couple of days: I would like to see a way to defend ships and sectors from other ships.
