[net.games.emp] What the $@&*! does "You are schizophrenic." mean??!!

sean@ukma.UUCP (Sean Casey) (07/21/85)

I installed and am administrating empire for ukma. Occasionally one
of the players here get's the message "You are schizophrenic." when
logging into her country. What the $@&*! does that mean??? It's not
documented anywhere, I can't come up with a reasonable explanation
for it, and I have no source (of course). What does it mean, and how
do I fix it?

"You are schizophrenic." This message means that you are running Empire
in the background. Thus, if you write a shell script

Empire "country name" password >/dev/null <<_empire_
map #1 >map
census #1 >census
commodity #1 >commodity
quit
_empire_

and run it in the background, you'll get this message if you try to log
in while the script is running.

Unfortunately, it can also happen that you get tossed out of Empire without
doing a quit or ^D (e.g., your terminal hangs up). When this happens, you
should wait (sometimes as long as an hour), and eventually Empire will
realize that you're not playing. What's more, it usually won't even reduce
your login time when this happens.

This happens when someone logs out unconventionally (ie. via ESC, BREAK,
etc.) and the game thinks that they are still there (I call this "leaving
a ghost"). Since it doesn't want someone to get double time by logging
on with two terminals, it doesn't let them in, claiming that they are schitzoid.
(since they exist twice, they are in a sense, schitzofrenic) Am I
making any sense? Am I being any help? I often had this problem myself
(when we had a game going on) and I'm not sure how to fix it. I think that
the "DEITY" must clear this up. I was never able to.

[Bring back exchanges!]

The words "you are schizophrenic" come up when empire thinks you
are trying to log into it more than once. This happens most frequently
to me when I try to enter empire when one of my 'bureaucrats' (as I call
the scripts I run periodically using 'at' to update my country) is still
running inside empire.

One time, however, empire glitched and kept telling me that I
was logged in even though I wasn't. Even running 'fixup' and making
sure the the nation data file didn't believe I was on didn't help.
(Isn't it amazing what one can do with the root password, the 'su'
command, and the fact the the 'empnat' file in the data directory
doesn't encrypt players passwords? :-) It finally believed that I
wasn't logged on when all other players had logged out.
