Has anyone seen the problem where the info command gives you a screen of junk file names? It looks like it is chopping characters off of file names and sometimes throwing in extra characters. Info on a particular subject works fine, but when info takes a look at the directory it seems confused about its contents. Any fix for this?

Here is an archive of my empire fixes which gets rid of problems with info on 4.2. ----------- cut ---------- : Run this shell script with "sh" not "csh" PATH=:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/ucb export PATH all=FALSE if [ $1x = -ax ]; then all=TRUE fi /bin/echo 'Extracting README' sed 's/^X//' <<'//go.sysin dd *' >README Fixes for PSL's empire (version as of Jan 1983), to make it run on 4.{2,3} bsd. Here is a start at fixing some bugs caused by changes from 4.1 to 4.2. 1) New info command since info scan's directories this is needed. You probably want to pre nroff the info files. Also how nroff/pager is run maybe different than original check nrarg[] and nnrarg in empdefs.c 2) since stat changed, add new gtmod and modtime. 3) new ioctl so new sread/inflush 4) use better random number generator. This gets the obvious bugs (not all are gone). To install this: unpack the sources (I use /usr/games/.../EMP/FIXES) make make install (will put the new .o into the archives) rebuild empire //go.sysin dd * made=TRUE if [ $made = TRUE ]; then /bin/chmod 664 README /bin/echo -n ' '; /bin/ls -ld README fi /bin/echo 'Extracting gtmod.c' sed 's/^X//' <<'//go.sysin dd *' >gtmod.c X/* * Return mode of a file. */ #include <sys/types.h> #include <sys/stat.h> gtmod(file) char *file; { struct stat stb; if(stat(file, &stb) < 0) return -1; else return stb.st_mode; } //go.sysin dd * made=TRUE if [ $made = TRUE ]; then /bin/chmod 664 gtmod.c /bin/echo -n ' '; /bin/ls -ld gtmod.c fi /bin/echo 'Extracting inflush.c' sed 's/^X//' <<'//go.sysin dd *' >inflush.c X/* * flush input */ #include <sys/ioctl.h> inflush() { static int rd = 1; ioctl(0, TIOCFLUSH, &rd); } //go.sysin dd * made=TRUE if [ $made = TRUE ]; then /bin/chmod 664 inflush.c /bin/echo -n ' '; /bin/ls -ld inflush.c fi /bin/echo 'Extracting info.c' sed 's/^X//' <<'//go.sysin dd *' >info.c X/* * Repaired version of info */ #include <sys/types.h> #include <sys/dir.h> extern char *nrarg[], junk[], *nroffil, *infodir, *argp[]; extern int nnrarg; extern char *copy(), *fmt(); extern long modtime(); extern char *ctime(); info() { register int pid, w; register char *p; char *topic; int status; long mtime; if( (topic = argp[1]) == 0) { ilist(0); return; } if(topic[0] >= '0' && topic[0] <= '9') { ilist(atoi(topic)); return; } if(strcmp(topic, "on") == 0 && argp[2]) { topic = argp[2]; } p = copy(infodir,junk); *p++ = '/'; (void) copy(topic, p); nrarg[nnrarg] = junk; if( (mtime = modtime(junk)) < 0) { pr(fmt("There is no info on %s\n", topic)); return; } pr(fmt("Info on %s -- Last mod : %s", topic, ctime(&mtime))); pid = vfork(); if(pid == -1) { pr("vfork error\n"); return; } if(pid == 0) { execv(nroffil, nrarg); pr(fmt("Sorry, %s is not execlable\n", nroffil)); _exit(1); } while( (w = wait(&status)) != -1 && w != pid) ; } static long cutoff; static iselect(dp) struct direct *dp; { if(dp->d_name[0] == '.') return 0; if( cutoff && modtime(dp->d_name) >= cutoff) return 0; return 1; } ilist(days) { extern char *infodir; register struct direct *dp; register int n, i; struct direct **namelist; extern int alphasort(); if(days) { time(&cutoff); cutoff -= days*24*60*60; } else { cutoff = 0L; } if( (n = scandir(infodir, &namelist, iselect, alphasort)) < 0) { pr("No info available"); return; } if(days) pr(fmt("Info topics modified since %s", ctime(&cutoff))); else pr("Information is currently available on:\n"); for(i = 0; i < n; ++i) { dp = namelist[i]; pr(fmt("%-16.16s", dp->d_name)); if((i % 4) == 0) pr("\n"); free((char *) dp); } pr("\n"); free((char *) namelist); } //go.sysin dd * made=TRUE if [ $made = TRUE ]; then /bin/chmod 664 info.c /bin/echo -n ' '; /bin/ls -ld info.c fi /bin/echo 'Extracting makefile' sed 's/^X//' <<'//go.sysin dd *' >makefile # # Empire fixes CFLAGS = -O EOBJS = info.o GOBJS = gtmod.o modtime.o rand.o sread.o inflush.o OBJS = ${EOBJS} ${GOBJS} all: ${OBJS} install: ${OBJS} ar r ../../glib.a ${GOBJS} ranlib ../../glib.a ar r ../empcom.a ${EOBJS} ranlib ../empcom.a //go.sysin dd * made=TRUE if [ $made = TRUE ]; then /bin/chmod 664 makefile /bin/echo -n ' '; /bin/ls -ld makefile fi /bin/echo 'Extracting modtime.c' sed 's/^X//' <<'//go.sysin dd *' >modtime.c X/* * return time last modified */ #include <sys/types.h> #include <sys/stat.h> long modtime(file) char *file; { struct stat stb; if(stat(file, &stb) < 0) return -1; else return stb.st_mtime; } //go.sysin dd * made=TRUE if [ $made = TRUE ]; then /bin/chmod 664 modtime.c /bin/echo -n ' '; /bin/ls -ld modtime.c fi /bin/echo 'Extracting rand.c' sed 's/^X//' <<'//go.sysin dd *' >rand.c X/* * random upgrade */ srand(seed) { srandom(seed); } int rand() { extern long random(); return (random() >> 2) & 0xffff; /* make it a short */ } //go.sysin dd * made=TRUE if [ $made = TRUE ]; then /bin/chmod 664 rand.c /bin/echo -n ' '; /bin/ls -ld rand.c fi /bin/echo 'Extracting sread.c' sed 's/^X//' <<'//go.sysin dd *' >sread.c X/* * Safe read */ #include <stdio.h> #include <setjmp.h> #include <signal.h> #include <sys/ioctl.h> static jmp_buf sjbuf; static int icatch() { longjmp(sjbuf, 1); } int sread(buf, size) char *buf; { struct sgttyb otty, ntty; int (*oint)(); int cc = 0; ioctl(0, TIOCGETP, &otty); ntty = otty; if(setjmp(sjbuf)) goto leave; oint = signal(SIGINT, icatch); ntty.sg_flags &= ~ECHO; ioctl(0, TIOCSETN, &ntty); fflush(stdout); cc = read(0, buf, size); leave: ioctl(0, TIOCSETP, &otty); signal(SIGINT, oint); return cc; } //go.sysin dd * made=TRUE if [ $made = TRUE ]; then /bin/chmod 664 sread.c /bin/echo -n ' '; /bin/ls -ld sread.c fi

What type of system is this running on? Berkeley or USG ? Perhaps you tried to use the USG version of info.o on a Berkeley system. Berkeley has the mucked up directory structure remember...
