[net.math] floating-point on net.math

kevin@cornell.UUCP (Kevin Karplus) (01/24/86)

Warning: no math content.

I for one have been pleased to see floating-point discussions on
net.math. For detailed technical discussions of loating-point
implementation, net.arch may be a more productive newsgroup.

I agree that floating-point is not exactly the same as polar-bear
problems, nor is it a discussion of the philosophical relevance of
Goedel's theorem. But it is at least as mathematical as either of
those. They also have more relevant newsgroups (net.puzzle and
net.philosophy).

I read net.math for the variety of topics covered, and would like to
see discussions on all aspects of mathematics. If a discussion starts
getting too specialized, it can be moved to more appropriate
newsgroups.

Incidentally, if anyone has a solution for the recently posted problem
of picking phases to minimize the peak sum of sine waves, I'd like to
see it also. I've not had time to work on the problem myself, anbut
I'd like to see an answer. Fast algorithms for numeric solution are as
good as analytic answers for this problem.
