You have to be careful when buying 2400 bps modems (at least for other than
internal use where you can buy ALL of the modems) is that you get ones that
are likely to be compatible with what others have. I noticed that the DEC
modem in the compilation in V4 #140 is a Bell 201 standard modem, while some
of the others are CCITT V.24 (not sure about this number) which are quite
different.
Bell 201 is 2400 bps, but half-duplex over the switched network (you need a
4-wire leased line for full duplex). A venerable standard, but not
universally applicable because so many systems do not support half duplex
and syncronous operation.
Even being 2400 bps full duplex does not ensure interoperability (for
example of what can go wrong, look at 1200 bps full duplex modems where the
Vadic 3400 and Bell 212 protocols are utterly different implementations of
the same basic modulation scheme).
I don't know what standard will finally win out, but at least you know the
CCITT standards will work will most modems in Europe, and maybe here too.

Subject: Some TOUCHSTAR ads

Two ads about TOUCHSTAR in the Orlando Sentinal in November:

1.

TOUCHSTAR - and trace annoying phone calls.

Take advantage of CALL TRACING. It's already programmed into your phone
line.

Now you can take immediate action on annoying phone calls, thanks to CALL
TRACING. The moment the call is over, simply dial *57 (rotary and pulse
dial(1) phones dial 1157). When you do the number of the person who has
just called you and the time of the trace is automatically recorded at
Southern Bell's security office. You must then notify Southern Bell to
investigate the call for you. It will be necessary to tell us the time and
date of the call.

For brief recorded instructions on TOUCHSTAR services, dial *88.

Remember, there is no need to activate TOUCHSTAR services. They're already
programmed into your phone, and you will be charged only when you use them.

For CALL TRACING, however, with a $9.00 one-time connection charge, you will
be charged only $3.00 each month for two traces. Additional traces are
$3.00 each. Without subscribing it's $5.00 per call traced.

Look for our ads on other TOUCHSTAR services or call your Southern Bell
business office.

(1) Pulse dial phones are pushbutton sets which are not Touch-Tone
compatible. TOUCHSTAR is available only on calls made between Southern Bell
customers within the Orlando Southern Bell served area. This excludes long
distance numbers, coin telephones, PBX lines, Key systems with rotary or
hunting numbers, multi-party lines and numbers outside the Orlando Southern
Bell served area, or numbers served by other telephone companies. Prices
may vary during this market trial. [...list of prefixes with TOUCHSTAR

2.

TOUCHSTAR and the mad dash to the phone is over.

Take advantage of CALL RETURN. It's already programmed into your phone
line.

How many times have you made a mad dash to your phone and got there a ring
too late? Well, now you may never miss another phone call. Because by
simply dialing *69 (rotary...(1) ...1169...) you can activate CALL RETURN.
This allows your phone to automatically dial the last person to have called
you. If the line is busy, CALL RETURN will automatically keep checking the
number every 40 seconds for up to 30 minutes.

For brief recorded instructions on TOUCHSTAR services, dial *88.

Remember, there is no need to activate TOUCHSTAR services. They're already
programmed into your phone, and you will be charged only when you use them.
For CALL RETURN, the rate will be 25 cents per usage.
