Since the Local C.O. doesn't have anything to do with billing in the new broken up network, your suggestion would have to be implemented by the LD carriers. If I had a choice of carriers that provided such a service vs. those that didn't, that would be another factor in the decision of which carrier to choose, along with reliability and price. DTMF DID is available from many central offices. It does require extra hardware, so it won't get installed unless it is a clear win for the Telco. /john

Actually the local C.O. never have anything to do with the the billing, however the LOCAL OPERATING COMPANY does as opposed to the LONG DISTANCE carriers as you suggest. There are such things as INTRA-LATA TOLL CALLS. -Ron
