While I have to admit that I am not a real audiophile, I wanted to comment on the business of stereo on a video tape machine. Perhaps it may be technicaly possible to provide it on some wierd tape format, to my mind its usefulness seems very limited. For example, when viewing a movie in the theatre with the associated large screen, the stereo sound gives the image a lot of realism by directing your attention to various parts of the screen. When viewing a movie at home, however, the screen is relatively small and while the stereo may make the theme music nicer to listen to, the business of drawing your eye across the screen with sound doesn't seem like it will work well. Star Wars is an example of the above comments. When viewed in the theatre, the sound directed your eye to the spectacular effects. When viewed in the home, the stereo would do little, because the screen is so small. What I am trying to say is that stereo VCRs may be nice, but I think its only some kind of gimmick to get people to buy another recorder. People may argue that a concert would be nice to see with stereo sound and I'm afraid I can't argue that one except to say that the sound would be the same if they bought an album and played a record.
