Martin's questions on cable ready VCR. 1. Yes, you can directly plug your cable end to the vcr and record the channels you desire. Now here is the tricky part. Most of the cable ready vcrs have 12 to 14 switches for selecting channels. For cable ready vcrs if you can select any channels via keypad as in cable ready tvs, then just select that channel and record it. However, if there are only limited switches rhen you can tune any of the channel button to desired sttation and then record. Here is what I do. I have a GE vcr which has 14 switches. I have tuned these 14 switches to 14 most likely stations we watch and record from them. Many of the stations tuned on vcr I cna not get from tv station selector. I do not have a converter box because our cable company provides basic cable service without the box for people with cable ready tvs or vcrs. Of course you cna not get stations such as HBO. 2. I don't know the answer myself to the question if there is an american standard for scrambling. HBO is going to digital scrambling (see EE times Feb 28 83).
