A friend recently bought a VCR and discovered that one can't copy
rented tape from one machine to another without a black box of
some sort between machines. Why? It seems that the company\
originally recording the tape must add a signal to the video that
the machine can recognize, but the television doesn't. The result
being that the tape can be viewed on the TV, but can't be recorder
  to add to one's collection....

No good reason not to except, of course, that very few companies currently
do. I am advising a couple of friends who are starting a software publishing
firm (innitially based on the Apple for marketing reasons) which they intend
to follow the model of a publishing house, including royalties as an authors
principle form of payment.

I used to bootleg tapes in just this fashion from one Betamax to
another with no problem. All you need is some coax.
