The Beta format may indeed still have a minor edge in quality over VHS, but depending on your intended use, the availability of prerecorded tapes is indeed a consideration. In our area of New Jersey, there is one rental outfit which maintains a huge library of Beta tapes and is commited to continuing that library. But nearly all other rental places deal in VHS. They never even ask which format you need - its assumed you want VHS. Thats the kind of software dominance VHS is getting. My brother in northern NJ bought a Sony and is disappointed because he can only find one store renting Beta and that store has fewer than 100 tapes. I would advise any new buyer to determine how they intend to use the machine and if the major use is watching precorded movies, determine the availability of tape libraries and the rental rates.
