I recall reading an article in some magazine (about six months ago) which documented the recording format for both VHS and BETA. The article had drawings of the tape showing how the sound, video, and control tracks were positioned on the tape. It also described azimuth reversal (I think that's what it was) used to prevent video cross talk between adjacent helical scans. The article described how the super Hi-Fi sound was to be encoded for each tape format (it even defined the modulation frequencies).
