[net.video] Beta HiFi

Three things:

Most definitely. One thing that my father found that cannot be done, though:
Since his earlier Betas were not stereo, when a simulcast of an opera on PBS was
done, he made a reel-to-reel tape of the simulcast, as well as a videotape of
the tv broadcast. When he got the Beta-HiFi, he tried to copy the video over
through the video-in jacks and copy the simulcast over through the audio-in
jacks at the same time. Well, it *works*, but the speeds on the various machines
are variable enough so that even starting off in sync (and my father was *very*
good at that), the two sources fairly quickly get noticably out of sync.

No, I haven't tried using a dbx unit with the Beta HiFi, mainly because I don't
have a dbx unit. I'd be interested in hearing the results, though. Sometime I'd
like to try hooking up the multiplex filter that came with my Beta HiFi. But
you're right about the terrific sound that comes out of the BHF. By the way, as
an addendum to a posting that I made about a month ago, in which I listed the
the audio specs for the Beta HiFi, I finally found out that the signal-to-noise
ratio is roughly 70 (the video s/n is ~45).

I've been using the same thing for my Betas (the brand is Texwipe, and it's 65%
Freon TF and 35% isopropanol), and I've gotten good results with it. This is the
stuff we've been using here at DEC to clean tape drive heads. I've got a head-
cleaning casette, too, though I have yet to use it. The advice I got was that it
should be used only as a last resort.
