Lately I have found an increasing number of ads for satellite video systems in newspapers and in my mailbox, and am seeing them spring up quite regularly out in the rural area in which I live. The prices seem to be down to well under $2000.00, so I have begun to think about acquiring such a system. Unfortunately, I know very little about the market or the hardware, so would appreciate any commentary on the available products, the viability of the market (are encryption systems soon to be used to foil these systems?) and what I should look for when I talk to any of the several dealers in my area. I know that $2000.00 is still a lot of money, but given a long enough life span, and the fact that I will never get cable out here in the boondocks, and that network programming is lousy, it may not be such a bad investment. Seems to me that satellite TV systems should be a booming market, and that its growth could have far-reaching effects on pay-TV and cable operators.
