[net.video] Proton comments

Rob Paull wanted info on video monitors. As I've said in earlier notes,
I have a Proton 600M (19") and think it is the greatest. I did a
side-by-side comparison with the NEC 19" monitor/receiver and found the
Proton to have deeper blacks, brighter colors and sharper details. As
for the Proton not being a "mover"; I stuffed mine into my car and drove
it 60 miles home, lugged it up stairs, and it worked perfectly. My local
dealer says that he gets no complaints about Protons, and that he prefers
them to NEC (which he also sells). They are supposedly quite reliable.
I've had mine for about 3 months now and it has given me no problems.

As for prices, I got mine for $650. It sometimes goes on sale for about
$630, but I haven't seen it any lower. (Note that this is the 600M I'm
talking about.)

Also, I want to add to my note yesterday about the Sony SL-2710 no longer
being available "cheap". I went to my dealer yesterday and he says that
the prices are down again, and he will be selling 2710s for $870.

In regard to monitor/receivers. I would agree that the Proton monitor
(19" is the one I've been looking at) seems to have the best picture quality.
However, the NEC 1901M monitor/receiver can be had for $540 in my area,
and thus is substantiallycheaper than the Proton. I'm still debating with
myself on which way to go. (What I'd really like to do is take both home
with me, and live with each for a few days. Oh well!) By the way, the 19"
monitor/receiver sold by Magnavox is actually the NEC 1901M, with different
name tags. It typically goes for ~$60 more, it seems.
