There's another good reason to avoid using L830s, besides the problems
one may have with thinner tape.  The price premium you pay for the extra
30 minutes of recording time just isn't worth it.  L750s are the most commonly
available length, and an average good retail price for an L750 is $7.99
(Sony, Maxell), and discounts are often available.  L830s, on the other hand,
are only made by a few vendors, and are usually priced as much as 50% more than
the equivalent L750, if you can find them at all.  Is it worth it?  I don't
think so.

Note that the same argument applies to VHS T160s vs T120s.
