Re: the question about playing PAL or SECAM
    videocassetes on NTSC television sets.

Video magazine (September issue) reports that
a company called Instant Reply has produced
what it calls an Image Translator (list price $695)
which enables NTSC viewers in the North America or
Japan to play European tapes (e.g., on the PAL system)
on standard NTSC monitors/televisions and VCR's.

Video magazine reports that the output suffers
from a lot of flicker, and that it is non-recordable.

My own advice to any interested party would be to
buy a good PAL VCR and monitor from those places in
New York and California which carry them. The
total cost of such a system would be slightly more,
but the resultant picture quality would be well worth
it. By the way, don't forget that Beta is much more
popular than VHS in Europe and the Middle East.
