[net.video] Recommendations on a VCR?

ela@hoxna.UUCP (E.Asbeck) (01/02/85)

I'm in the market for a VCR, but am unsure what's good stuff and
what's junk. Talking to salesmen is pretty baffling, particularly
with all the fast talk.

I've got friends with Panasonic and Fisher, both pleased with their
purchases. In addition I own a Mitsubishi TV which I am extremely
pleased with, so my instincts are to trust in their VCR's. I hadn't
even thought of Beta format until reading this group today.

I'd appreciate your comments on brands, pointers to good reviews (my
trusty Consumer Reports doesn't have the latest scoop, unfortunately),
and impressions on which bells and whistles are useful/superfluous.

I will summarize if there is sufficient interest. Thanks in advance.

I think if you look closely at the Fisher, you'll find that it is also
made by Matsushita, who make the Panasonic.

If you look closely you will find that the Panasonic and Fisher are
made by Matsushita Electric, so I don't know how a Mitsubishi TV is
supposed to correlate (all those Japanese look the same).

For what it's worth, a friend has a fairly recent, top-of-the-line
Panasonic VCR and my father has one of the older *ahem* portable
decks. We haven't really had problems with either of them. The
older deck suffered one infant failure that was fixed quickly by
stopping by the repair facility that just happens to be located near
here.

I'm inclined to stick with Matsushita, most of the active components
in my stereo are Technics, and when I worked at a radio station we
used Technics tape decks, turntables, and equalizers. The only problem
I have, is that they've stopped making a lot of this high end stuff.

Fisher Vcr's are not manufactured by Matsushita but rather by Sanyo

I think it probably comes and goes. At the time my father bought his,
I seem to distinctly remember looking at one and saying "these two look
the same" and then looking at the back and finding out they really were
the same.
