I have the new Canon portable VHS VCR (can't remember the number). It's based on the Masushita box that Panasonic and others use, but I was told by the store person that Canon puts extra heavy duty ("professional", whatever that means) heads and other wearing parts in, and the result is a better, more stable picture, etc. I have no complaints about the video. I run EP normally, and have rock solid, well detailed images, even in freeze frame. The audio is another story. The wow and flutter are nonexistent, and the S/N is great--while there is some program material. But as soon as some quiet passage occurs, the AVC cuts in and amps the sound until the background noise is uncomfortably audible (there's no manual recording level control on the box--damn!). I've contacted the store, who've suggested that I bring it in for a check. I suspect the only solution though, is another box which has manual controls to handle the wide dynamic range program material I record occasionally. -- Robert Reed, CAE Systems Division, tektronix!teklds!bobr
