x Listening to Cellular Telephones Using a Television Set Several weeks ago, I posted an article in which I told of being able to hear 800 MHz land mobile communica- tions on my 800 MHz television set. Here are some excerpts from a letter to the editor appearing in the May 1985 issue of Personal Communica- tions magazine: "In reference to your March 1985 article on cellu- lar privacy, I have developed a technique for eavesdropping on cellular users that requires no fancy scanner, no computer, no sophisticated antennas or any other gimcracks....." "....By using the manual tuning on the varactor tuner in my VCR I have little difficulty listening to the neighborhood cell sites on my 1973 model Zenith TV.... Since sidetone is transmitted I hear both ends of the conversation....." "Handoff is an irritation, but frequently I am able to manually sweep across the band and pick up where they left me. What really irks me is the low audio level from the TV due to the deviation mismatch." "The real significance of all this is that anyone with a TV and VCR connected to a TV antenna can get the same results with a little practice...." -- =============================================================================== Bob Parnass, Bell Telephone Laboratories - ihnp4!ihu1h!parnass - (312)979-5414
