[net.video] Looking for Video "enhancer"

cem@intelca.UUCP (Chuck McManis) (06/18/85)

I am looking for a reccomendation for a video "enhancer." This is to correct
some of the degredation in the video signal when making copies from on video
tape machine to another. Specifically, when editing out commercials and then
putting all of the episodes from a series contiguously onto a series of tapes
a given piece of video information can have been copied up to 5 times in the
process. The quality of the signal goes down noticeably. So to the
"videophiles" on the net, what is a good unit for this sort of thing anyway.

I recommend the Vidicraft Detailer III. I have used several different
units, including Radio Shack, Recoton, and Hybrid. The Vidicraft produced
the best results.

It has 4 sets of inputs and outputs, each set consisting of video and
stereo audio, and therefore can also be used as source selector and
distribution amp. The inputs and outputs are all buffered. The inputs
are feed through an external processing loop which allows other processors
(such as a proc amp (video) or noise reducer (audio)) to be added to the
system.

The 'enhancer' portion of the unit has controls for the amount of edge
enhancement, detail enhancement, noise limiting, and black noise limiting.
The last reduces the amount of noise in black areas without affecting
the rest of the picture. It also has a color/B&W switch which adjusts
the enhancing process appropriately, a bypass switch, and a split screen
circuit which allows you to display part of the screen enhanced, and part
not, for comparison. The split point can be adjusted across the screen.

The results are very impressive when starting with good material. It
should be pointed out that no enhancer will restore lost information, so
the results are less pleasing when the material is not good to start with.
It is therefore best to use the enhancer for each stage of the copy.

I am also impressed with the quality of construction on the Vidicraft
unit.
