[net.video] Super Beta

nzm10@amdahl.UUCP (Neal Macklin) (06/25/85)

I'm a happy beta user. I got a good deal on a beta hifi unit, only to
find the next week that MTS had been added (which I expected) to the
new decks (for more money).

Then I saw that Super Beta was advertised, and it's been mentioned in
several articles on the net. I understand it is compatible with beta.

What is Super Beta?

How is it technically better?

Does it improve on beta hifi as well?

Also, I know this is a dumb obsolete question, but what is the difference
in recording schemes between beta and vhs?

Are there any currently available books or periodicals on this stuff?

My friendly local video delear (Hi Tech Video) sells both Beta and LaserDisc.
He claims the 20 per cent improvement in resolution provided by Super-Beta
is noticeable, but nothing to get excited about. It still isn't anywhere
near the same league as LaserDisc n respect to picture quality. In additon,
the sound quality on prerecorded tapes usually isn't as good as on LaserDisc
because of the extra generations involved.

SuperBeta increases the center frequency of the video FM signal by about
1 mHz, allowing for a bit more bandwidth in the Y channel. The I and Q
signals are still hetrodyned to a low freqnency narrow bandpass channel.

If you have a two piece VCR, you might be able to replace the tuner portion
with one that received the MTS signals. It might also be possible to add
MTS decoding to your present tuner.

When the local PBS affiliate goes stereo, I plan to look into just such a
conversion myself. From what I have read about MTS brodcasting standards,
you might wish to listen to an MTS stereo broadcast before deciding to
spend the money to decode them to stereo.
