Two questions on beta hi-fi 1) I recently borrowed a friends vcr (sony hi-fi sl-hf300), I have a sony hi-fi sl-hf500. I rented some beta hifi movies and played them on my vcr and used my friends vcr to record them. I connected the vcr's using the video and audio jacks. The sound quality is great but the picture has a grainy texture to it. I tried adjusting the sharpnes and tracking controls on both vcr's but it did not seem to help. Does any one have any comments on this problem? would connecting the vcr's via the coax be better? Heads are clean.Picture quality from tv recordings is excellent. 2) Our local cable company is offering the movie channel in stereo. They hook up the stereo signal to your fm tuner. What are the recording or sound differences in fm stereo verses beta hifi tape copying? Are there difference?

I (and a friend) own Sanyo 7200's. We record both off cable and between our two machines. The first time we were dupping, the picture's looked as if they'd been "painted". That's the only way I can describe it. Also, high contrast edges would "dance", i.e. jump around, not the whole edge in unison see, but parts of the edge, and not in unison. It was strange. Then we got some gold tipped cables which were marked as "video or stereo" and now we get PERFECT recordings. Connecting the machines by coax would probably end you up with decent pictures, but there'd be a loss of detail. You just wouldn't be picking up any noise or getting any problems from running hi freq signals over an unshielded cable. >2) Our local cable company is offering the movie channel in stereo. > They hook up the stereo signal to your fm tuner. (except, the dup of Purple Rain I made a couple of months ago is MUCH better than a recording I made off cable a couple of days ago). I have the speakers on my stereo hooked up in a funny manner which partially decodes the Dolby Surround Sound information (if it's available on the recording). There's been a couple of movies I've gotten off cable which HAD that information there. And it MADE it through all that equipment between the satellite and me! And it got RECORDED on my tape! (The movie I'm thinking of in particular is "Something Wicked This Way Comes". There's this scene towards the end where the evil nassty is psychologically abusing good ole Jason Rhobards, and they're in the hall of mirrors, with fog all around the room, and evil nasssty's voice is coming from all around you, telling Jason what is going to happen to him, it makes my skin crawl remembering it!) At any rate .... It works. The only problem I have is wanting to record PARTS of MTV. DEFINITELY NOT ALL OF MTV.
