[net.video] Vertical blanking information on commercial tapes

I rented "Revenge of the Nerds" on VHS cassette last night and noticed
that the vertical blanking stripe, normally black, contained the
letters "CBSFOX-%" (where "%" was an irreproducible squiggle),
stretching from the left margin to the center. Is this related to copy
protection, or does it have some other function? The tape played
flawlessly.

Yes, those logos in the vertical interval are part of
tape/ID/copy-protect systems.
