Karen Kolling reported problems with her "weeks old" Sony SL-2710. While I don't think the 2710 is any more problem-prone than any other VCR (I know several very happy 2710 owners), this kind of infant mortality is what a warranty is for. I believe you have at least a 90-day warranty on the 2710, assuming it was purchased as new. Take it back to the store where you bought it for service. Service contracts are generally not worth it. As for trying to solve the problem, you might try cleaning the heads (preferably with foam swabs and freon, but otherwise a good-quality wet-tape system will do). I have found that my SL-2700 has twice (in two years) gotten into some strange state that screws up recording and playback, and that a cleaning solves the problem. It may be a piece of foreign matter stuck somewhere unfortunate. Steve
