[net.video] Sept. Consumer Reports on VCR's

minow@decvax.UUCP (Martin Minow) (08/25/85)

The current (September) issue of Consumer Reports contains a
long discussion of vcr's, including recommendations. Unfortunately
the marketplace is so volatile that they couldn't do a full
evaluation of the new super-Beta machines. They do note, however,
that super-Beta picture quality is better than vhs at slow speeds.

There's a good chart with a checklist of features for about 60
vcr's.

The VCR artical would be great if there weren't so many errors.
As it is, I don't know which things to trust and which are wrong.
For example:

The only Panasonic recorder the artical says can tune MTS sound
is the PV-1442 (and that includes built-in or adaptor jack)

The Zenith VR5000 is said to have MTS, Dolby, and HiFi, but
not stereo. This is in the "Marketplace Guide". In the "Ratings"
section, neither HiFi nor stereo is checked.

Perhaps after corrections have been published, it will be more useful.

By the way, does anyone know anything about the RCA VLP970HF which is listed?
And what is HF?

I just bought one. It's the 86' model RCA 950. It's the first front
loading portable, it has flouroscan VU meters for the HiFi and forward
audio tape search. I think it looks better too. By the way, CU claimed
that two of the disadvantages of this deck was that it didn't have
a carrying strap and that you were forced to program it with the remote
control. Sometimes they go off the deep end !!!
