Awhile back I send a message muttering about how my new Sony 2710 was producing recordings with a tremendous amount of vertical flutter, and wasn't this a pain in the neck, for a machine to malfunction when it was only a month old. Now that I've got some more experience with the situation, it has become more bizarre and interesting. Shortly after I bought the vcr, I also bought a stack of blank Sony "gold tapes" from the Wherehouse. What is actually happening is that each time I record on one of these gold tapes for the first time, the recording is terrible, full of vertical flutter. If I then rerecord over the tape once or twice, things become okay. Other (old) tapes that I play shortly after a "first recording" on one of the gold jobs usually aren't effected, but sometimes they have a tiny amount of flutter, which vanishes if I rewind and play it again. This has happened with all of the gold tapes, so it's not just a coincidence. Does this sound like there is some rubbish on the surface of the new gold tapes, that the trusty vcr is getting rid of?

Such problems should be reported to Sony customer service immediately. They are very good about dealing with such complaints. Perhaps you got a bad batch of tapes. --Lauren--
