[net.video] Advice sought on videocassette repair

zeus@aero.ARPA (Dave Suess) (11/10/85)

I have a trusty tape I have used daily for years; after getting work done
on my VCR, the fast-forward (now stronger) managed to jerk the end of the
tape off the left hub of the videocassette. Has anyone had any experience
with how to reattach the tape to the hub? I fear wrinkles with adhesives.
Getting into the cassette (and back out) is no problem; I'd like to salvage
the tape as a worker again (but I'd settle for a one-shot, with some sort
of glue, if needs be, to see what was on it).

(The tape, by the way, is a Maxell Epitaxial HG T-120, that I bought in
January of 1981. The first half-hour or so developed problems (like a warp
in a record: permanent interference, on the tape) and I was ready to scrap
it; instead I put it to use to tape "daily" stuff, Letterman, shows when I
was out, possible views, shows to see with fastforward on commercials, etc.
I used this tape daily, averaging at least an hour or two per day, until
the end of September in '85, and it refused to show any signs of wear except
a brief ripple at about the 3-hour mark from multiple start-stops. Great
tape, at least then.)

Awhile back I was dubbing borrowed tapes (the first flashback from DARK
SHADOWS) and one of them broke. I took it to the same shop that cleans
our VCR once a year. They repaired it professionally for five bucks.
Given the risk that an adhesive might gum up your heads.... Why not
telephone around your local VCR repair places, and see if you can find
someone similarly accomodating.
