Recently I have experienced a strange problem on my VCR (VHS). On some of my tapes, the recorder is behaving as if the end of tape were in the middle of the tape at a specific spot. This occurred in places which were originally in the middle of recordings, and there seems to be no way to record or playback over these areas. Obviously, either I have a problem with my tapes or a problem with my machine. Has anyone ever experienced similar problems? Does anyone know how the machine ordinarily recognizes the end of tape? Any clues to what the cause of my problem is? Thanks in advance, Ed Friedman

On VHS machines, the ends of the tape are detected by a light source going through the leaders on either end and shining on photodectors. So, when the tape goes to either end, the ligh will be 'seen' through the leader and that will cause the circuitry to put the machine into stop. Also, the take-up spool normally has a motion detector that makes sure that the tape is moving. If it isn't, the machine is put into stop. Check to make sure that the take-up spool is working, at the point where it wants to stop. You may have a torque problem. -- ihnp4------\ harvard-\ \ Mr. Video seismo!uwvax!nicmad!brown topaz-/ / decvax------/
