[net.video] The future of 8mm

speaker@ttidca.UUCP (Kenneth Speaker) (12/27/85)

Does anyone care to speculate on the future of 8mm video now that one of
the camcorders has been dropped (I don't remember if it was Poloroid or
Kodak, but one announced that they were discontinuing marketing of their
8mm camcorder)?

The video and audio quality of the models I saw did not thrill me. Video
looked like non-HQ VHS, audio was not that much better, really. AFM (mono
only!) and an 8-bit (!!) PCM (stereo, with dbx-like companding). Sorry,
but a ~45 db S/N just does not cut it, even with ~95 db dynamic range.

Question to audiophiles: Have you ever wondered why a dbx copy of a CD
does not sound like the CD at loud levels? Because the CD has ~95 S/N,
the dbx copy only ~90 db of DYNAMIC RANGE, ***WHICH IS NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT
THE SAME***.

END FLAME;
