I recently got the new NEC "HQ" VHS HiFi VCR. It seems as though the HQ circuitry was included at the last minute; the only mention of HQ on the chassis is a decal, and there is no documentation in the user's manual, only a separate sheet with a few worse of Japenglish saying that HQ means better video. In particular, there is no discussion of a three-position switch: "normal, detail, edit", except "switch to edit when dubbing tapes." (To thwart flames: the tapes that I dub are home movies of my daughter.) My uneducated guess is that the "detail" setting switches in some of the HQ circuitry. I have no idea what the "edit" setting does. Can anyone enlighten me? This deck is similar to the JVC 566, apparently made by JVC, but with additional features, particularly including playback of linear stereo audio with Dolby decoding. I'll post a review in a week or so. -=- Andrew Klossner (decvax!tektronix!tekecs!andrew) [UUCP] (tekecs!andrew.tektronix@csnet-relay) [ARPA]
