[net.video] Sony SL-HF900 problem

speaker@ttidcb.UUCP (Kenneth Speaker) (03/05/86)

It seems Sony may have a problem with the SL-HF900 SuperBeta deck. I have
two of them and both of them have exhibited the problem:

Recording OK.

On Playback there are color moire patterns extending to the right of any
strong contrast transition, e.g., characters in the closing crawl. These
moire patterns extend from the right edge of the character to the end of
the scan line, but ONLY on scan lines which contain the contrasty transi-
tion.

The first deck started this behaviour while under warranty, and I took it
to Sony for repair. I will pick it up this afternoon. The second deck has
just begun to exhibit the same behaviour -- it is 6 weeks out of warranty.
I get a chance to see what it will cost to repair when I take it in this
afternoon.

Hopefully they got a batch of bad parts which are now failing, and it is
not a design flaw. Any EE types care to comment about what is going on?

Well, I get a similar effect with my JVC HRD 151 HQ VHS deck, but only when I
use a tape that has been re-used several dozen times. Never with new tapes.
You might try a little experiment and see if that makes a difference.
