If you've been looking for a good price on a laser disc player Starship Audio Industries has the N.A.P. Magnavox VC-8040 on sale for $288.00, the price includes UPS ground shipment. This unit is almost identical to the Pioneer LD-700 (slight cosmetic changes and I believe the slow-motion speed range is not as wide) and is a front-loading unit with a solid state laser on sale until April 1. Starship also has an excellent selection of laser discs and all prices are 10% off list. First time customers get 15% off and they quite often have sales on older discs. They have a 24-hour hotline that gives current and up- coming disc release information at 703/430-0330. They have a phenomenal warranty in that a defective disc may be returned at any time as long as it is still being manufactured or, if not, if it's still in stock. I have returned a couple of discs for very minor (but irritating) defects and they've been re- placed with no question. Their catalog is free and they mail quarterly updates. The catalog is also full of useful information about laser discs, how they're made (individual manufacturer's defect rates), the players, and the studios that release them. Starship Audio-Industries 605 Utterback Store road Great Falls, Virginia 22066 order lines: 703/430-8692 703/450-5780 Disclaimer: I don't work for these guys or know anyone who does, but there's a guy down the street whose mother has a sister whose son has a son that once worked for DiscoVision in 1981 for three months as a stockroom worker and had considered purchasing a disc player but instead got a pair of radials with raised white letters for the rear of his Dodge Colt and this really neat gearshift lever knob that has a built in LCD clock with an alarm and an accelerometer that can measures in G's but he sold the car a year later to this guy from Oregon and I don't know what he's driving now. Does that count? --- Kevin Thompson {ucbvax,ihnp4!nsc}!voder!kevin "It's a sort of threat, you see. I've never been very good at them myself but I'm told they can be very effective."
