Activity at my feeders this "winter" is the slowest I can remember. That's easy to explain by the lack of snow and abundance of food, but how do you explain this scarcity out in the field? There are plenty of waterfowl around but land birds are difficult to find. Further north there are some winter finches, but in Toronto I have yet to see even one Evening Grosbeak. Are the birds avoiding just me or are other birders finding the same general scarcity? And I'm not referring just to winter finches--even birds like chickadees, nuthatches and woodpeckers are not common. Birding is supposed to be fun, not hard work. What gives? Hello, hello... is anybody out there???? Happy Birding! decvax!utzoo!andy

I think they have all gone to Lake Woebegon. I went to our cottage last weekend in Dunnville Ontario. (Anybody who doesnt know where Dunnville is and thinks Buffalo isnt all that far off). Usually the place teems with nuthatches and evening grossbeaks, all waiting to be fed since we only restock the bird-feeder once a month (if that). November 22 was the last fill and *there were still lots of seed in both feeders*. Laura Creighton decvax!utzoo!laura
