[net.rec.birds] The Lagoons are Teeming With Life

djo (05/11/83)

San Diego attracts a variety of birds due to its proximity to the
coast, its latitude, and the wide range of habitats. More species
have been recorded at San Elijo Lagoon than any other local. The
following are some of the more unusual sightings:

European widgeon - rare
Clapper rail - population declining
White-faced ibis
Belding's savanna sparrow - population declining
Downy woodpecker
Bell's vireo - population declining
Harlequin duck - rarely sighted in Southern California
Yellow-crowned night heron - up from Baja California
Eurasion widgeon
Chimney Swift - normally seen only on East Coast, seem to have made
the lagoon a stop in their migration
