I am really glad that I started up this newsgroup a week ago. There have been many, many remarks since then. I do have a response to the Birdman of Alcatraz (Purdue). I am from Indianapolis and I do a lot of birding (not as much as some others I know though) all around Indiana. It is NOT desolate like you think. If you would like to find the good birding areas of this state, you might want to buy the book, "Indiana Birds and Their Haunts" by Charles and Tim Keller. They are members of the Butler Audubon Society of which I am a member. This books points out what birds may be seen where and how to get to these places. Or if you would like, I can let you know when we are going on a hike and you could join us. The group has even gone birding around Lafayette (I'm not sure where they went because I was on vacation). One of the best spots during the winter is Lake Monroe in Bloomington. We spotted 14 bald eagles (7 mature, 7 immature) in January. Another good spot during the winter and spring is the Indiana Dunes--lots of good spots there. Please don't think that Indiana is desolate. It's not!
