I was absolutely delighted to read the recent posting to this newsgroup - I've subscribed to it for months and haven't gotten anything until yesterday. I have been avidly watching a pair of ruby-throated hummingbirds who have been visiting our flowering quince. It won't be long and the quince flowers will be gone....besides putting out one of those hummingbird feeders, how can we encourage these birds to stay and nest in the area? Are there some annuals we can plant in our flower garden? Martha Celestino ....decvax!decwrl!rhea!wagon!celestino

[}{] If you are feeding the hummingbirds, DO NOT use those little tablets. Hummingbirds need a lot of energy. To make the food, use 3 cups of sugar for every two cups a water. Boil the mixture to dissolve the sugar and add a little red dye (after a while, the dye will not be needed). My mother, up until three years ago, used to feed the hummingbirds, year round, at her house. During the summer months, we had as many as thirty hummingbirds and about four different varieties. Also, if you ever stop feeding the hummingbirds, DO NOT do it in winter when there is not enough other food around. You will end up killing what hummingbirds that are depending on your supply of food. -- Brad Brahms usenet: {decvax, ucbvax}!trwrb!trwspp!brahms arpa: Brahms@USC-ECLC
