CUANES Alert 6-6-91 (Alert no. 308)

Tuesday May 28, 1991, two dental health workers were detained by
the military and summarily conscripted into the armed forces on
the spot, while in route to the Diocese of Chalatenango as part of
the ongoing implementation of the oral health program there. The
oral health program is an extremely valuable program providing
many people their only opportunity for dental care. The program is
strongly supported by the churches in the country.

The two men were first taken by soldiers of the 1st Brigade, and
later sent to the 3rd Military Detachment in La Union, on the
other side of the country. They remain in effect forcibly and
involuntarily drafted, despite local attempts to gain their
release. The dental health workers being held are:

Gabriel Fernando Alvarado Gomez, dob 3/18/72, son of Jose Gavriel
Alvarado and Edilia Gomez de Alvarado, from the village of El
Palmo, municipality San Francisco Javier, Usulutan.

Adilio Abelino Landaverde, dob 11/10/64, son of Francisco Salvador
Landaverde and Maria del Carmen Sanchez de Landaverde, residents
of the repopulated community El Tremedal, Chalatenango.

REQUESTED ACTION: Telexes, faxes, phone calls requesting the
release of the two men who provide badly needed health care which
the government does not adequately offer. Insist that the
physical integrity of both men be respected.
