CALDN is a national emergency response network of about 1000 members in defense of Central American and Mexican trade unionists. When unionists are kidnapped, tortured, or assasinated, CALDN sends protest messages via telexes or paid ads in Central American newspapers. CALDN is a project of the Labor Coalition on Central America, which is made up of local labor committees on Central America. Recently, some committees have become involved in local coalitions organizing to include a social and environmental charter in the free trade agreement with Mexico, and in developing relationships with unionists in Mexico. Responsibilities include: * writing, producing, and distributing brochures, urgent action bulletins & reports; * organizing emergency response efforts by U.S. unionists; * administering and maintaining a telex emergency response network and * fundraising to meet the expanding costs of the CALDN program. Qualifications: Applicants must have good communication skills, organizing experience, basic computer skills and some administration experience. Knowledge of the U.S. labor movement and Central America and the ability to speak Spanish would be helpful. Salary and Job Info: The position is half-time, twenty hours per week, with flexible hours. The salary is $9.00 per hour. Although the office is currently located in Oakland, the position could be relocated if necessary. The position is available as soon as possible.
