/* Written 3:04 pm Jun 17, 1991 by cuanes in cdp:carnet.alerts */ /* ---------- "CUANES Update 6-17-91" ---------- */ CUANES Update 6-17-91 The following is additional information about the June 15 capture of 22 people in Santo Tomas by the National Police: On June 15, l991, at around 8 am, elements of the National Police raided the technical training center of the Salvadoran Association for Integral Development, (ASDI) located 9 1/2 km. from La Antigua Carretera a Santos Tomas in the department of San Salvador. At the time, six technicians from ASDI and the University of El Salvador were conducting a training seminar on community leadership development for the Communal Association of Campesinas (ACC), the Coordinator for Salvadoran Repopulations, and the repatriated community, Nuevo Gualcho, located in the department of Usulutan. Members of the National Police threatened, beat, and captured 22 persons, among them a 3 year old girl who was with her mother. They were all put into vehicles and taken to the Central Cuartel of the National Police in San Salvador. During the raid, the National Police destroyed furnishings and equipment, and took away material and equipment belonging to the Center. Additionally, four vehicles belonging to ASDI and the community Nuevo Gualcho were confiscated. As of Monday, June 17, all those captured remain detained at the National Police. Urge their immediate release and the return of the four vehicles belonging to ASDI and Nuevo Gualcho. Bring these flagrant violations of human rights by the National Police to the attention of your local media and Congresspersons.
