==================================================== From: "Brian G. Hauk" <bghauk@watdragon.waterloo.edu> ==================================================== If you are interested in receiving some or all articles from the collection mentioned in the appended ad, please send me mail. I'll be away until Sunday June 30 and will begin to reply then. Also, if you would like to know about an ** Alternative News BBS ** which is about to go up in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, let me know. It will run listserver database software and subscribe to many Usenet newsgroups and mailing lists. If you're working on a similar project and might be interested in an alliance, let me know. Brian Hauk (bghauk@watdragon.uwaterloo.ca) ------------------------------------------------------------------ Waterloo Public Interest Research Group Media Watch Database Available! ======================================================================= The Waterloo Public Interest Research Group (WPIRG) is collecting and distributing articles relating to the mass media, and topics not covered by them. They are from the computer newsgroups and mailing lists of a global network of thousands of computers called Usenet, accessible from most university UNIX accounts and many public computer bullitin boards. Among the (over 1200) reports collected (almost exclusively from the ACTIVISTS computer mailing list) for distribution are the following: A Look Behind The News - Larry Bensky, Pacifica Radio, 3/27/91 Anti-War & Media Actions, 1/31/91 Chomsky on "The Gulf Crisis," London Guardian and Z-Mag, 1/10/91 CINAW (Campus Information Network Against War) Newsletters Contacting Organizations Electronically Corporate Profiles: ABC, CBS, NBC, NYT, Washington Post Ex-CIA Agent Philip Agee's Speech, "Producing the Proper Crisis" Ex-CIA Agent John Stockwell's Speech on the Gulf War FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting) Media Resources List FAIR's Report on MacNeil/Lehrer: "All the Usual Suspects", May/90 FAIR: Survey Shows One-Sided TV News Sources Gulf War: A Study Of The Media, Public Opinion & Public Knowledge George Lakoff on "Metaphor and War" Glossary of Selected Gulf War Terms by George Cheney How Becoming More Computer Literate Changed My Activist Life How Capitol Hill Controls the Press How TV Sold Bush's War in the Gulf Inverted Media & The War, Norman Solomon, FAIR, 2/6/91 Ideas on Media Activism, 1/30/91 Ithaca Media Watch: "We Lie To You by Not Telling You Things" Kenneth Burke Quote: From A RHETORIC OF MOTIVES, 1/20/91 LEAFLET: Protest of Pro-War Media Bias Media Activism for Peace -- An Interview with Jeff Cohen Media Distortion - Shoddy and Inaccurate Reporting, and Cheerleading Media Linguicide & Class Wars, Normon Solomon, FAIR, 3/11/91 Media Propaganda: Marines Wait for Possible Ground Attack Observations About the Mass Media PEACENET BROCHURE: Electronic Communications for Peace and Social Justice The Media Goes to War: HOW TELEVISION SOLD THE PANAMA INVASION War is Not a Video Game What does George Mean by "Not another Vietnam?" World War Three Diary, Hal Pepinsky Although many people have access to computer resources required to gather these reports, few have the time to find them among thousands of lesser value. We would like to make them available to everyone, including those without Usenet access. To receive our title index, and an article or group of articles, send electronic mail having the subject line, `INFO REQUEST' followed by a description of what you'd like to WPIRG's email address, given below. Alternatively, send your request to our regular or inter-campus mail address, stating floppy disk size (3 1/2" or 5 1/4") and capacity (low or high density). Include with any floppy disk request your return address and a $4 cheque (covering postage, floppy mailer and disk cost) made payable to WPIRG. We regret not being able to send printed reports due to the high cost of paper and postage and that only IBM format disks are available because of limited resources.
