FILE 1 OF 4: RESOURCES ON DRUGS AND COVERT OPERATIONS
The Christic Institute's Resource Center can meet your needs for
educational resources on covert operations, the war on drugs and
other national issues. Our resource catalogue is broken down into
four categories and posted as four separately: Drugs and Covert
Operations, Multi-Media Resources, National Security State and La
Penca Project. Details on how to order are at the end of this file.
NEW BOOK. _Drug Wars: Corruption, Counter-Insurgency and
Covert Operations_. With particular attention to corruption in
drug-producing nations such as Mexico, Peru and Thailand,
author Jonathan Marshall examines how the overriding U.S.
preoccupation with the spread of communism in this hemisphere
has impelled high-level U.S. officials to strike alliances
with drug traffickers. 1991, hardcover, $14.95
NEW BOOK. _Pipe Dream Blues: Racism and the War on Drugs_.
Although African Americans and other people of color comprise
less than 15 percent of all drug users in the United States,
the havoc caused by police and gang violence and the loss of
civil liberties affects their communities the most. This book
examines the racism inherent in the Bush Administration's
``war on drugs''on people of color, women, the poor and the
Third World. 1991, paperback, $12.00
NEW BOOK. _Cocaine Politics: Drugs, Armies and the C.I.A. in
Central America_. This well-researched book documents how
contra resupply operations and other U.S. covert actions in
Central America have fostered and sustained the crack
epidemic. Prof. Peter Dale Scott and Jonathan Marshall show in
detail how U.S. officials attempted to discredit a Senate
subcommittee investigation and the Christic Institute's
_Avirgan v. Hull_ lawsuit, both of which exposed the contra-
cocaine connection. 1991, hardcover, $24.95
NEW BOOK. _The Politics of Heroin: C.I.A. Complicity in the
Global Drug Trade_. In 1972 when the C.I.A. attempted to
suppress the publication of _The Politics of Heroin in
Southeast Asia_, the book became a cause celebre. Eighteen
years later, in the revised and expanded edition of his book,
Prof. Alfred McCoy reveals the full role of the U.S.
Government in fueling international heroin and cocaine
epidemics. 1991, paperback, $19.95
BOOK. _Deep Cover: The Inside Story of D.E.A. Infighting,
Incompetence and Subterfuge_. Michael Levine, a 25-year
veteran of the Drug Enforcement Administration, recounts one
of the D.E.A.'s most dramatic, ambitious operations--which
caught the drug kingpins of three countries red-handed--and
tells why U.S. officials never brought them to justice. The
result is an explosive expose of why we're losing the war on
drugs, told in the words of an American who has devoted his
life to winning it. 1990, paperback, $5.95
NEW TRADING CARDS. _Drug Wars Trading Cards_. Humorous art and
text on notorious drug kingpins like Lucky Luciano and the
well-documented connection between drugs and covert
operations. Features ``Ollie's Folly,'' ``Dan Quayle's Smoky
Trail'' and ``Operation Just Because.'' Each deck includes 36
full-color caricatures and concise fact-filled narratives on
the reverse side. Perfect as gifts, party favors, stocking
stuffers. Ideal for high school and college students. $8.95
NEW. _Guns and Drugs Reader_. A bound collection of news
articles, speeches and essays which examines the connections
between covert operations and the drug trade. Edited by
Prevailing Winds. Ideal as a teaching aid. 1991, paperback,
$18.00
AUDIO. _Lines of Deceit: Cocaine and the White House_.
Documents the ways in which drug smuggling has been used to
finance secret wars and illegal operations by the C.I.A. and
its private associates. Examines the foreign and domestic
dimensions of the ``war on drugs.'' Interviews with John
Stockwell, Daniel Sheehan, George Bush. 1990, one hour, $9.95
